Lecture notes// Modernity and Modernism #1

Modernism was initially born out of optimism, an aspirational reaction to WW1...
Modernity, Industrialisation and the urbanisation of a city. Bringing change to the way people live their lives (culture) and think as people... leading to NEW MODERN ART FORMS. Modern Artists were beginning to look in a different direction, they began looking at the city for ideas rather than Religion and imagination.

Modern improvement is automatic, the new woman VS the old woman = Modern Improvement. Consumer progression = thriving culture. Paris were the leading modernists, they took pride in showing the world their 'Electric Walkway' and of course the 'Eiffel tower'. The Eiffel tower also connects to the power France had with Modernity.
The development of Rail stations meant the world had to agree a 'World time' if it were to work.

If we start to think about subjective experience (the experience of the individual in the modern world). We began to see the depiction of the Artists and Designers. In a way, the invention of Photography makes painting obsolete, therefore Artists try to find new ways to paint - out of the ordinary.

Urbanisation means to come from a country life and join the city, embracing the new technology that was being so rapidly invented. Fashion became a way of communication for the social classes, suggesting how wealthy you were and what you stood for. (This was a very different approach to the country, where people knew who they were without materialistic goods).

Modernity was said to have started in the 1750s and ended in the 60s. However this is thought to be inaccurate and open for argument.

Process of rationality and reason, SECULARISATION. Scientific reason takes over.
HASSMANISATION PARIS. Onwards from 1850, Paris was considered 'new Paris'. Haussman was an architect and his work ended up neglecting poor people, forcing them out of the cities. It had gone through the period know as 'Haussmannisation', There was a radical change through the invention of  huge boulevards that took out the tiny boulevards which reduced crime by a big number, this also meant easier access to the city by the army and Police, street lighting was also introduced, making things a lot easier to control/contain.

Artists ended up turning to the cities as modernism had become a huge part of the worlds life.
1893- Massive change in the world technology, this meant a huge change in the worlds art.

Timeframe: Modernity (1750-1960) changed social and cultural experience drastically. A range of styles sprang from this phase, creating the phrase 'Modernise'
