Lecture 9: Identity (James Beighton Thurs 13.12.2012)

Essentialism is basically what makes us who we are, it allows a lot of cliche's and stereotypes to arise.

Phrenology, based largely around the white skinned person, the essentialist viewpoint consists of various sections of the brain being well balanced for a well balanced identity. If one of these sections is larger than the other then tendencies in your identity arise.

Very much about fixed identities.

Gives rise to a new working class, at the time different writers began writing about it which gives us a varied view on modernity.

Veblen - A gentleman who strolls around observing society and its habits, this idea is reflected in the painting above. The whole idea of the leisure class is that you don't have to go to work. Consumption of goods that are made explicit to the public, giving people an opportunity to admire what your wearing. The fact that they don't have to work gives people something to aspire too.

The upper classes had this inconspicuous way of emulating what they wear, giving the lower class something to aspire to, the determination to move up the social scale.

In modern society you were encouraged to go out in what you wear and show your possessions off however it gave way to a feeling of isolation and disrupted the human abilities that make us what we are.

Anything that doesn't sort of relate to the hetrosexual, white, male was considered in the 'others'

Essentially it starts by looking at how the other half live, People going the pub, dog on the floor, mess on the floor , you could say this implies that they're Southerners. The second image implies a sense of culture whereas the bottom image displays kids playing with a rabbits foot, probably from an earlier meal.

People are attending a high class event but Bauman makes a point of showing the womens gut with a stain on her dress, shrouding the truth?

Race/ Hate crime in London, reference to black culture in art, black identity produced in a way that represents how white people would interpret them, printing on Poo.

She grew up most of her years with people shouting 'Ginger' at her, in response to this she used her textile experience to produce work that almost celebrates the fact that she was ginger.

Drawing attention to the stereotypical

The person on the right is actually a girl, but we think this because of the stereotype? Mask of femininity.

Stereotypes of women as they're portrayed in films.

Objectification of a woman. Tracey Emin - the standard and tabloid way of looking at this would be too say she's a slag however they were her intentions, the actual meaning of the tent is showing everyone Tracey Emin has actually just got into bed with, not necessarily who she's slept with.

Is this how males perceive women? judging them solely on their physical appearance? however the women on the right wearing the 'I may not be brilliant, but I have great breasts' is actually a male undergoing surgery to become a women.

Most of his books are obtainable in the LCA Library.

Suggesting the plain reality, that modern existence is quite bleak.

Takes Facebook to a whole new level, creating a virtual community to satisfy your needs. The married man decided to leave his spouse following his online relationship with a women he'd never met. The media probably had a field day on this couple basically because of their physical appearance and the minimal resemblance in the game, in the game the man portrays himself as a well-built businessman.
